Russian spectators will have a chance to see three shows
For the first time in its history, the National Ballet of Canada will tour Russia in mid-October 2018 to perform at Diana Vishneva’s Context Festival.
The Canadian company will present to the Russian audience three one-act ballets per programme – Paz de la Jolla by New York City Ballet dancer and Resident Choreographer Justin Peck; Being and Nothingness by National Ballet Principal Dancer and Choreographic Associate Guillaume Côté; and Emergence by renowned Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite. These performances will be held at the Stanislavsky Theatre in Moscow on October 15 and 16, and the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on October 19. The National Ballet’s Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin will conduct the Stanislavsky Orchestra in Moscow and the Mariinsky Orchestra in St. Petersburg. Tickets are available through the festival’s website. The price ranges from 1,000 to 10,000 rubles (from 19 to 190 CAD). According to Broadway World Toronto, the Artistic Director Karen Kain considers the invitation to this prestigious festival an honour. The National Ballet of Canada was founded in 1951 by Canadian dancer and choreographer Celia Franca. This summer, this Canadian company was named the Best Company of the Year by French L’Association Professionnelle de la Critique de Théâtre, de Musique et de Danse. The Ballet’s team numbers 120 people, including artists, dancers and musicians, as well as production and administrative staff.
Diana Vishneva’s Context Festival was founded by prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Ballet Diana Vishneva in 2013 as an international festival of modern choreography. As reported on their website, over the years, the festival has brought to Russia many internationally acclaimed dance companies such as the Martha Graham Dance Company, Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, the Ballet Company of Maurice Bejart, the Suzanne Dellal Center, the Richard Alston Dance Company, Introdans, Gauthier Dance, Netherlands Dance Theater: NDT II, Ballet Preljocaj, Ate9 dANCE cOMPANY, and NANINELINNING.NL. This week-long event attracts up to 10,000 spectators annually.
